Considerations for Selling Fine Art Privately

Selling historic American fine art privately avoids certain risks and expenses that are often associated with selling at auction.  In considering the disposition of your art, our typical recommendation is to first arrange for a confidential, private sale.  Should such a sale not be completed in the desired timeframe there would be no fees involved.  In addition, following the decision not to pursue a private sale, the seller would still have the option of going to an auction house.  The limited exposure associated with a private sale has far less of a negative effect on a subsequent auction sale than do the public records of a failed auction sale on a potential future private sale.

Commissions on private sales are charged only upon successful completion of the sale.   By contrast, in contracting with an auction house numerous fees are paid by the seller whether or not a sale is completed.  The auction houses make money regardless of their sales performance.
Selling fine art through a discreet, qualified and reputable dealer is the most beneficial way to achieve maximum returns.
